AI is the reason this matters right now. But the same divide keeping us from aligning on AI is keeping us from aligning on everything else — our food, our bees 🐝, our health, our planet. Fix how we treat each other, and the rest starts moving.
The manifesto
It's an old one we stopped practicing.
There was a time we looked out for our neighbors before we knew their politics. A time we sat at the same table, disagreed, and still passed the potatoes. A time "decent" was just how you were supposed to act, not a debate.
Somewhere along the way, we started rewarding the loudest voice instead of the most honest one.
We let power and greed convince us the fight was the point. We got so busy defending our side that we forgot the person on the other side is still just a person.
AI is coming, whether we're ready or not. It will learn from how we already treat each other — our patterns, our priorities, what we reward and what we ignore. If we can't manage to align with each other, we have no business expecting to align something smarter than us.
And AI is really just the sharpest version of a question we've been dodging for a long time. The same division that keeps us from steering AI well is the same division that's let our food, our health, our planet get run for profit instead of for us. One human race, a lot of shared problems. We don't get to solve any of them divided.
So before we figure out how to control AI, we have to figure out how to come together as humans again. Not agree on everything. Just remember how to sit at the same table.
Five ways back
Hear someone out, not to win, but to understand what they're actually afraid of and what they actually want.
Ask who benefits from keeping people divided and distracted. Division is often profitable for someone.
City council, school board, the block — but also your state legislators, your senators, your representative. Power concentrates when regular people check out, at any level. Find and contact your elected officials.
Learn how it actually works and who's building it. The Stanford AI Index tracks the companies, the money, and the policy moves in plain terms. The NIST AI Risk Management Framework is the U.S. government's own baseline for managing AI risk — good grounding before you contact anyone about it. Don't leave the decisions to whoever's loudest.
Build, play, cook, volunteer alongside people who disagree with you. Shared tasks build trust that shared opinions never do. Tactic two, in practice
Corporate greed in every industry
It's not one thing. Under every topic below, there's a lot of corporate money to be made — and the damage from it is already visible. Anyone paying attention can see it plainly.
Read that back. That's not eight separate complaints. That's one system, running the same play in every direction it can reach — including the AI buildout happening right now.
That's the case for slowing down, plainly. We need the infrastructure. We don't need to hand the decisions about how fast, where, and at whose expense to whoever's moving quickest. Slow enough to get it right beats fast enough to regret it.
And notice who's holding it up. The middle class works the jobs, pays the premiums, and buys the products that keep these companies profitable — the same class getting squeezed by nearly every line above. We're the ones propping this up. We can also be the ones who reach a hand down to the people getting squeezed even harder than we are, instead of fighting each other for whatever's left.
Same pattern, different logo, every time. This isn't about picking a side. It's about noticing who benefits when we're too busy fighting each other to ask who benefits.
The irony
The same AI everyone's afraid will spiral out of control could plausibly help fix every problem above — better food systems, cleaner materials, catching price gouging, tracking pollution at a scale no human team could match.
But a technology only aims where the humans behind it point it. Pointed by the same profit-first incentives running these industries now, AI just makes those systems faster and harder to question. Pointed by humans who've actually aligned on what matters, it could be the biggest tool we've ever had for fixing this.
That's the whole bet behind align the humans first: the AI isn't the variable. We are.
If you're stirred up right now — good. That feeling is worth more than a sticker. Take it to your officials, your community, the people around you who've stopped fighting for better. Stick it up somewhere people will see it — someone asks what it means, and now you're talking about all of this with someone who wasn't five minutes ago. That's the job it's for.
